Lessons Learned
- Board and Batten Coat Rack
- The nail gun was an absolute necessity for us when creating the board and batten coat rack. We actually had to go back out to the store to purchase one when our boards would not sit evenly on the walls. The one I linked is the one I use. It seems to go on sale quite often.
- Plastic wood was my saving grace. The nail gun helped the boards sit evenly but there were still minor uneven imperfections. To buff these out, I used plastic wood.
- Stencil Floor
- Yes, 3 coats of polyacrilic on top of your stenciled floor is necessary. In fact, the more the merrier. It may seem redundant but those many coats of polyacrilic will protect all of your hard work from everyday wear and tear. There are some sources out there that say polyacrilic will yellow after awhile but I also read that it is only when there is a particular chemical underneath. My floor currently has no yellowing.
- In hindsight, using something like the brush baggy would have saved me so much time (and money) in the evenings after work.
- Benjamin Moore employees recommended their Porch a Patio paint over their Satin Impervo paint for floor painting.
- Depending on what color you want below your stencil, you might be able to get your primer tinted the same color, thus saving you money on an extra gallon of paint. I would do a couple extra coats of primer in this case.
Inspiration/How To Links
Bringing this inspiration to life of course started with Pinterest. I fell in love with the way Jessica Sara Morris of jessicasaramorris.com did a blush board and batten for her entryway. Our coat closet is a few hundred steps from the entryway so hooks are a necessity for taking the dog in and out during weather events like rain, cold, and snow.
Next, I needed to make a decision about the floors. I wasn’t a fan of the current tile color. I thought about putting in gunstock wood floors to match the rest of the house but then changed my mind when I thought about muddy paws and shoes.
That’s when I came across Liz’s stenciled floor from her website within the grove. She uses stencils from Dizzy Duck Designs. This company will create custom sizes for you if their standard stencil sizes don’t add up. I also sought painting advice from Julie Blanner at julieblanner.com.
